Counselor Troi

Deanna Troi was assigned to the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) as "ship's counselor"--besides attending to the well-being of the crew, she also was to help Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander William Riker, the Enterprise's executive officer. As a native of Betazed, Troi is an empath, able to sense the emotions and motivations of others--a useful trait in a counselor. As she was a graduate of Starfleet Academy and held the rank of Commander herself, she was also qualified to command the ship.

Of course, there are a few complications. Troi is half-human, which means her empathic abilities are not as well-developed as a full Betazoid; her father was a human Starfleet officer. She and Riker are also former lovers, which can (and does) complicate things. The fact that she's quite attractive means that a lot of crew are attracted to her--something that an empath could not fail to be affected by. Finally, there's Troi's mother, Lwaxana, who nurses a major crush on Picard...much to everyone's chagrin. Like everyone aboard the Enterprise, Troi's in for quite the career, with many tragedies, and many triumphs.

I have to say that I was on the fence about Deanna Troi as a character for the first few seasons. The way that "ship's counselor" is portrayed (at first) made her too much like a Soviet-era political officer, second-guessing the captain based on her feelings. Moreover, while everyone wore a uniform, Troi seemed to be stuck wearing a skintight outfit--while flattering to Marina Sirtis' figure, it seemed out of place on the Enterprise's bridge. Luckily, thanks to better writing and superb performances by Sirtis, the character grew into its own, and a valuable part of Next Generation.

My friend Kristen shows up a lot in this album, and with good reason. This was only the day after they dressed as Loki! Kristen did a spot-on Deanna Troi. Unfortunately, the picture's not as good as I would've liked, as my old camera was on its last legs at this point.
