IMG_1998 - Rosey Peeling A Free Mango . . .

2010-06-01 #378 - THANK YOU!!!!!

There are many joys to walking. One of course is the exercise and getting our cardio/vascular rate working (puff puff).Another wonderful benefit are the FREE MANGOES we pick up along the roadside. These particular mangoes are "Indian" by name. They are quite stringy and gangs go about collecting these. A lad will climb a tree with a net on the end, and out he goes onto the branch, puts the net under the mango cluster and pulls and hopefully said mangoes will drop into his net. This he puts into a smaller bag he has in the tree with him and when full he lowers it to the ground and one of his friends will empty this bag into a bigger bag and he hauls his littler bag back up the tree. This goes on until the tree is empty of mangoes and this could be a quick or slow job. Some of the mangoes he is endeavouring to collect will fall to the ground. They will not get these as they bruise and are no good for reselling. These particular mangoes are picked green and many people here consider these green mangoes a delicacy. They eat them with salt or with a sauce called bago-ong and this too is a delicacy. This sauce is also known as shrimp paste and if you can remember back to the 50s (I know, I am testing a lot of you here) my mother would buy a fish paste from our local corner grocer made by PECK'S. I think it came from England, was in a little glass bottle with fancy squares on the bottle and a lovely shiny brass-like top with a band that went around the top to keep it all secure. When we are walking there are many of these mangoes lying on the ground so Rosey, not one for wasting anything. will pick them up, peel them and eat them and we will usually share. The flesh inside is the lovely orange mango colour. YUMMO!!!! AND THEY ARE FREE!!!!!
