IMG_141 - Tourist Cave In Tasmania
This is an example of a tourist cave. At the bottom can be seen a wire fence to protect the formations. In a tourist cave there are passageways with good floors for the ease and comfort of the tourist, and also steps leading down and up in a cave. In a non-tourist cave, the explorer would use ropes or ladders to go down or up. As I was leaving caving (I became an arm-chair caver) SRT or Single Rope Technique was just coming into the caving scene in Tasmania. This entailed using a single rope and jumars, figure of eight knots that locked onto the rope, and a sling that would go around the foot or boot of the caver and this would support him/her on the rope. These would be moved up or down the rope depending on whether the caver was descending or ascending the rope.
