FedEx and infrequent fliers at Ohare
Way back in Jan, 2006, the O'hare cargo area adjoined St. Johannes Cemetery on airport grounds near Bensenville. This cemetery saw its last burial later that year, and graves were moved to Hillside, IL by 2012 to make way for airport expansion. As for the FedEx MD-10 N391FE...here's the story on her demise only 6 months after this photo was taken, at the tender young age of 32.
FedEx Express Flight 630 was a regularly scheduled cargo flight from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Memphis International Airport, Memphis, Tennessee. On July 28, 2006, the McDonnell Douglas MD-10-10F operating the flight, crashed upon landing due to a landing gear failure. The main left undercarriage collapsed seven seconds after touchdown causing the MD-10 to roll off the runway out of control. The aircraft finally came to a stop near taxiway M4 and caught fire. The fire consumed the wing and port engine and the crash and evacuation left everyone onboard injured. The plane was built in 1974 and flew for United Airlines prior to FedEx.
