Proxy Falls
Many years ago, only about a year after I had moved from Georgia to Oregon to attend law school (1993 if I recall correctly), I went white water rafting on the McKenzie River east of Eugene with a couple of close friends (one of whom would one day become my wife). After a terrific day floating down the McKenzie, we headed east to the Cascades and the Three Sisters Wilderness to see what there is to see. It was on that trip that I first learned about four of Oregon's very best waterfalls, all of which are well known to photographers here in the northwest: Sahalie, Koosah, Upper Proxy, and Proxy Falls.
For years after that trip, I remembered these waterfalls well and always wanted to go back to see them. Despite the fact that they are only about 2 1/2 hours away, I somehow found that I just never had the chance to make it back -- until this past weekend, when I took my 8-year-old son for a short camping trip.
These waterfalls were just as amazing as I remembered. Proxy Falls is the subject of numerous photographs, and it's easy to see why. This 150-foot waterfall provides too many unique compositions to count, and it takes on unusual and unique perspectives depending on where you stand.
I'll probably post a few more images of this waterfall, along with the other three beautiful falls in the area, over the next few days.
