Originally started in 1994, before elections, in a turbulent time in the old Transkei,
I decided to do one good sculpture in case it was the last. I took the wood from a fence pole on a farm.
I started shaping the hand and then the flowing lines under it, representing the hand as part of energy flow; it is tight on top but begins to flow freely after the hand. The hand represents the way we have an effect on history, and the stone is originally a traditional household stone for hand-grinding corn. The stone started as a solid grinding base but has been ground right through over the years. This represents anger or determination, as normally the woman who grinds the maize into maize meal would have stopped grinding as soon as a small hole appeared at the bottom.
Combined, the two elements represent determination, no matter how bad the situation is.
