Richard Smith claimed an exemption from military service because three years previously, he had scarlet fever, which left him with a weak back and affected his kidneys. Smith was a shoemaker, age 34 at the time he filed this claim. Born in England, he emigrated to the United States in 1852. He had a wife and three children in the 1860 census. He was in Bovina through the 1900 census. In 1910, he was living with his son-in-law in Santa Ana, California. He died the next year, age 84.
