KTVUReports
Stephanie Benavidez, Director of the Rotary Science Center at Lake Merritt, is interviewed by a reporter from KTVU regarding the theft early Saturday morning (May 14) of a porthole or gun port from the Battleship Maine.
It was one of a great many pieces that were salvaged from the Maine and turned into monuments in honor of the 266 servicemen who died when it was sunk in Havana Harbor in 1898.
Here's a photo of the gun port compliments of Harry Yagligian.
Please contact the Oakland Police Department if you have any information that will lead to the recovery of this piece of history.
LATEST NEWS: This afternoon, Schnitzer Steel here in Oakland alerted the Oakland Police Department that someone was there trying to sell the gun port for scrap. He was arrested and this priceless piece of history is about to be reclaimed by the City of Oakland. Thanks to the good people at Schnitzer and to Marcelo Gonzalez in particular.
