Cicada coming out of its shell-08

When I first moved to Texas, the unusually loud Cicadas were not a pleasant sound to me. Now I find them a soothing reminder that life goes on, even in the heat of the summer. They wind up their volume and then slowly die down.

Seeing them alive is rare, but their discarded carcasses can be found attached to fences, walls and trees everywhere.

In July, I witnessed two cicadas coming out of their shell just a few days apart on the inside of my compost bin. It reminded me of the movie "Aliens".

Please click on the following photos to see the birth process. Once out of the shell, they spread their wings and let them dry before they can fly away.
