Douglas-Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) Cone

and now, as I put on my professor's hat, a bit of a botany lesson:

 

First, notice the bracts protruding from between the scales--very diagnostic

 

Next, please note the name "Douglas-fir," with a hyphen. It is not a "fir," it is a "Douglas-fir." Firs belong to the genus Abies; this does not.

 

However, even professional guidebooks and manuals often tend to get the common name wrong, so feel free to use whatever you wish. However, to be among the cognoscenti, and amaze your friends . . .
