In life he was "Herman D. Pettingill" as the custom in the northlands of New Hampshire was to use middle initials and not middle names. I found the "Dudley" on a federal government form which would not accept initials..
Herman was born 16 Feb 1887 in Dummer, Coos County, New Hampshire.
Herman was a 3rd cousin to my mother.
As an adult he listed his occupation as "woodsman" on census forms.
