Tony's Fig Trees, Hicksville, New York -- about 1965

Fig trees do not like snow and cold. Italian immigrants would plant fig trees in New York and then wrap them in tar paper, putting a bucket over the top, to help the trees survive the winter.

 

This used to be a common sight in and around New York City.
