The School Office, Sanawar

The School Office, The Lawrence School, Sanawar, Shimla Hils, Himachal Pradesh, India.

This large spacious building was built in 1868 as the Headmistress’s house and was in close proximity to both the girl’s boarding house, now the boy’s holding house and the girl’s school, now the Parker Hall complex.

It is built in the typical style of the period with pyramid tin roof and a large preponderance of wod both on the roof and the floors. What must have been a beautiful verandah running around the building, has now been enclosed to create additional office space.

In the past the School Office was not much frequented by children and so did not occupy any great place in their memories. Now of course it has also houses the PCO from which children are permitted the rare phone call home. Ans as a result, for Sanawarians of the present generation the School Office will become indelibly linked with all the momentous news, both of joy and sadness, which they communicate to their parents.

A very ordinary and unpretentious flight of cement steps lead the way to the Headmaster’s Office. It is at the top of these steps that all defaulters wait to see what punishment is in store for them and for these unfortunates the steps become gloomy and forbidding.
