This chinchilla is my brother’s. This is something he has written for me:
“Buzz is a Hetero beige chinchilla who is just over 3 years old. He loves to sit on your shoulder whilst you walk around the house! He was acquired from a well known pet shop - he was in a cage with his two brothers but they were bought and sold separately leaving poor Buzz on his own. He is a very tame animal who likes cuddles but loves his sleep even more!
I have two additional chinchillas, one of which I have nursed back to health. When I came across her, named Valentina, a standard grey chinchilla, she was vastly underweight, and her shoulder blades and spine were clearly visible. She had lost half of her fur coat through poor diet and because she bit her fur due to boredom. I found out that she had been used for breeding, and after her last litter she was no longer wanted. Through two years of TLC, she is now a much healthier weight and has re-grown most of her fur coat. My other chinchilla, Alexei, is an ebony chinchilla. He too was left on his own after his brothers were bought. He was very scared at the pet shop, sat in the back corner of his cage shaking. When meeting new people, he still gets scared and shakes due to his experiences in the pet shop.”
The RSPCA do amazing things - they save animals every day from a meaningless life, from a painful life.
One of their key campaigns is the Five Freedoms.
Freedom from hunger and thirst
# by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.
Freedom from discomfort
# by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from pain, injury or disease
# by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
Freedom to express normal behaviour
# by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind.
Freedom from fear and distress
# by ensuring conditions and care which avoid mental suffering.
So, for the pets who were given as Christmas gifts and are not wanted a month on; for the garden birds who've suffered in the cold weather; for the battery hens and mutilated seals; for intensively farmed puppies and kittens beaten and left for dead; for the 150-200 animals still used in circuses; for all of these we raise awareness of the vital work carried out by the RSPCA.
