Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash, Wichita, 1996.

I first heard Johnny Cash on my grandma's Dansette in the 1960's. She like Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves and watching Westerns in black and white on her TV.

I met Johnny and June Cash in 1996, when I photographed them for Mojo magazine. It was a job at short notice, with a short deadline and I did a ten thousand mile round trip to shoot that picture. JC was set to perform at a mall in Wichita. He was going to be performing classics like "Boy Named Sue" but he was also trying out material from the second American Recordings album.

I went with him and June in his modest little camper tour bus and as we got near to the venue, all the roads were solid with traffic and the state troopers had to clear the roads for him to get to the gig. He was a tired and quite frail figure, quiet and in pain. June was delightful and really cared for him.

I couldn't imagine what to expect of his performance but I needn't have worried, he absolutely came alive for the show one hundred percent. It was like a switch going on. I'll never forget ti.
