[116787] Doncaster : Rail Heritage Centre - Green Arrow

Danum Gallery, Library & Museum, Waterdale, Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Rail Heritage Centre.

LNER Class V2 2-6-0 No 4771 Green Arrow.

On loan from the National Railway Museum.

No 4771 was built at Doncaster Plant Works in 1936 and was the first of a new class of locomotive. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, these powerful V2 locomotives were intended to pull fast freight trains along the East Coast Main Line. A total of 184 V2 locomotives were built between 1936 and 1944.

These locomotives proved to be very versatile and regularly pulled express passenger trains as well as freight services. Their reputation as reliable and powerful mixed traffic locomotives was enhanced during the Second World War. During this period, they proved capable of successfully hauling extra-long passenger trains of over 20 carriages.

Following the nationalisation of Britain's railways, Green Arrow was allocated the number 60800 in February 1949. It was withdrawn from service in 1962, but was selected for preservation of part of the national collection. The locomotive was restored to main line working condition on several occasions, and ran in preservation most recently in 2008.
