Stelae (tombstones) were Thomas Legh's most important discovery whilst in Athens in 1812. The stele above the chimneypiece depicts an aristocratic Athenian couple, Melisto and Epigenes.

 

The one on the right of the window bay includes theatrical masks so probably commemorates a playwright or actor.

 

Lewis Wyatt (1777-1853) created the library in the early 19th century by throwing together the apartments occupied by Richard Legh in the late 17th century.

 

Lyme was once home to the Legh family and, in its heyday, a great sporting estate.
