[82382] Hepworth Wakefield : Newlyn
The Hepworth, Gallery Walk, Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
Newlyn.
By Paul Feiler (1918-2013).
Oil on canvas, 1958.
Born in Frankfurt, Feiler studied at the Slade School of Art, London, before settling in Cornwall in the early 1950s, where he became associated with the St Ives artists through his friend Peter Lanyon. Like many of the St Ives School, Feiler developed a form of painting that struck a balance between abstract form, the material of the paint itself and suggestions of landscape or nature.
In this painting, planes of paint, densely applied with large brushes and a palette knife, establish a structured composition, dominated by subtle modulations of white that evoke the quality of Cornish light.
The Hepworth Wakefield is the country's largest purpose-built gallery in nearly 50 years and is named after Wakefield-born sculptor Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975). It opened in 2011.
