Pillar Boxes.

Following their introduction in 1852, early pillar box design varied from region to region until a national standard box was introduced in 1859 for use throughout the country. Over the following 150 years, new types were designed to meet varying public and operational needs. The iconic red cylindrical pillar box first appeared in 1879, and with some modifications, the design remains in use today.
