Little Herd of Sheffield, 2016.

 

58 elephant sculptures, each uniquely decorated by artists, have descended on Sheffield’s parks and open spaces, creating one of the biggest mass participation arts events the city has ever seen.

 

As well as the large elephants there are 72 little calf elephants which are on display in indoor venues. The Little Herd have been designed by local school children and teachers.

St Mary’s C of E Academy’s elephant, Santa Maria, is known to the children of St Mary’s as ‘Little Mary’. She is painted in gold and is decorated with jewels on her head, eyes, ears and toes just like the elephants of India. She also carries the school logo which was originally designed by the children of St Mary’s and which also appeared in every design the children produced.
