Repowered Ankai double-decker with Big Bus London
Much is said in political circles nowadays about the influx of Chinese-made buses to the UK and the effect it is having on domestic manufacture, but the activities of BYD and Yutong (and soon to be Higer) were predated by Ankai. It was here for a short period and supplied a number of these open-tops, which are given the cute name of HFF6121GS-3. They have spent their whole lives in the capital with Big Bus London.
No doubt in view of their negligible resale market as tri-axles, Big Bus over the past couple of years has worked with supplier Magtec to repower these buses from diesel to battery-electric. Such a powertrain can no doubt be delivered relatively economically for London sightseeing applications, as the operating landscape will mean that low mileages are covered and a modest energy storage capacity will suffice. Some of the Ankais carry green branding to mark their new zero-emission nature, but AN345 (LJ12 MYG) makes do with a small sash on its numberplate. Here is passes Parliament Square.
