Volvo BZL battery-electric in Cambridge

Volvo was relatively late to the party for battery-electric double-decker buses, debuting its BZL platform in 2021. In an indication of the Swedish OEM's revised approach to bodying both buses and coaches that has developed over the past couple of years, MCV is the only option in town for UK buyers. Such a combination coming in both double- and single-deck format.

Stagecoach East was the first operator to get the double-decker BZL into service. A decent number of them run in Cambridge thanks to government support via the first round of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas scheme. Since then, Volvo has made rapid progress with the BZL in the UK. At the time this photo was taken, around two years after the model was first heard of, more than 500 examples had been ordered here. 86016 (BV23 NSK) is seen outside Cambridge railway station, complete with rear-view cameras and glazed staircase.
