2018/01 Sydney - Perth and back road trip
I am back from my road trip to Perth, across the Nullarbor Plain, on the Eyre Highway, and a few side trips in between on serious gravel roads .
It was a long drive, 10,314 km to be exact. We used 646.92 litres of petrol *** (Benzin, gasoline, fuel) which, for my 1995 model SUBARU Imprezza with now 355,781 km on the clock, looks too good to be true and I have to check this again. The muffler (lost once on a previous gravel road trip) is still there, but somehow or another the rear windscreen wiper has fallen off and one of the number plates had to be attached with some nylon cord, because it too became lose. My old SUBARU certainly has seen better days, but it is very reliable. :)
We saw quite a lot of Australian wildlife:
- Kangaroos (of course),
- Emus (of course),
- Goannas feasting on a roadkill kangaroo cadaver,
- Eagles (most of them alive, one roadkill),
- a variety of other birds,
- one rabbit,
- dead foxes on the road,
- two live snakes,
- one dead snake,
- a number of Bobtail lizards, alive and roadkill,
- Australian sea lions,
- cattle and
- sheep.
And here, on the road to Yanga National Park in NSW
there are Unicorns ahead! Seriously!
*** Edit:
I tracked down all the fuel dockets and the following is what has come up in regards to fuel consumption of my 1995 Subaru Impreza Hatch GX 1.8L, manual. Considering the age of the car, high speed travelling, which may not have been the most efficient speed, a few hundred kilometres pretty rough gravel roads and A/C running on most days, I am pretty happy with the fuel consumption. A newer car would do better, of course.
Distance:
10,314km (6,408.8225 miles)
Highways, a few 100km gravel roads
Fuel consumption:
731 litres (193.11 US liquid gallons)
i.e.
7.08 litres/100km
3.013 gals/100miles
Just found out that the fuel tank capacity is 50 L
and fuel consumption given in the specs is 9.4L/100km which is a bit worse than 'average' in comparison to other, similar cars.
So, my old Subie has done pretty well :)
Most likely due to the excellent service provided by
As long as the engine is humming as nicely as it does, I shall keep the car and just drive it 'into the ground'.
