This is ceramic replica done by Julie Matthews of a petroglyph found on the southern tip of Kodiak Island. This replica is on display at the Alutiiq museum here in Kodiak. While it is a reproduction it is also a piece of art. The original artist carved it on a stone many, many years ago to serve as maybe a territorial marker or maybe to just express feelings or maybe to show others what people lived in the area or what wildlife was available. The ceramic reproduction is also art because it copies the original and makes it available to the public for viewing and appreciation. The reprodiction is very detailed with raised textured areas, rough areas, drawings, and lines the separate each area. It is not a mold but an incredible piece of work that shows us something that was made about 2000 years ago. It make us think as to what each picture and sections means. Are they random drawings or are they a message?
