Ford FPV FG Falcon F6 Utility + Engine

One of the longest running inline, 6-cylinder engines of all time, the 4.0 litre in the Ford Australia Falcon is a bit of a 'grandpa's axe'

 

New cams here, new heads here, new sump here, new injectors here….

 

The list goes on, yet the bore spacing and general layout remain the same. The latest edition arived in 2008, code-named 'Orion', and part of the the new FG Falcon (also code-named Orion) vehicle program. Power increased in the naturally-aspirated (N/A) engine, but the big news was the upgrade in power for the 'Turbo' and 'FPV F6' engines. The FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) was the strongest of all, now rated at 310 kW ( @ 5250 rpm) and 565 Nm ( @ 1950 - 5250 rpm), making it one of the most powerful and torque-strong inline-six engines of all time.

 

Rendered here in Lego, alongside one of the vehicles in which it is installed, the F6 Ute (or utliity). This makes for a very quick Pickup truck. The sedan version of which can run 0-100 km/h in approximately 5.0 seconds and 0-400m is 13.4 seconds. The utility model, though lighter, struggles to put all 565 Nm to the ground, and hence is a little 'slower'.

 

The Lego model has been created for Flickr LUGNuts 64th Build Challenge - 'Mad Motor Skills' - all about engines that power our favourite rides, car, truck or bike.

The FPV F6 engine, along with the more prosaic 'Turbo', N/A engine and the 'LPG', were the design projects I was assigned to in the 'Virtual Engineering' department of Ford Australia when I joined Product Develpoment in 2006. I later went on to join the Engine Engineering team responsible for the development of these engines in 2008-2011.
