Edsel 1958 Citation Convertible

Edsel Ford was Henry Ford's only son. An intelligent and cultured individual, partially responsible for the stylistic success of the 1930's Lincoln vehicles.

Edsel Ford died young, and did not have the opportunity to extend the legacy of his father's business.

When it came to introducing a new Ford Motor Company marque in the late 1950's, the Edsel name had not been favoured among the Ford family.

It is therefore doubley tragic that the Edsel name should now be synonymous with one of automotive history's greates marketing failures.

Conceived during the booming mid-1950's, the car was larger, more powerful and more highly trimmed (in line with the 1958 offerings from rival marques). Unfortunately, 1958 was a recession year, and along with other vehicle lines, the car did quite poorly in sales. Ornamentation had reached its zenith in 1958 and the consumer had grown tired of them.

Styling was mixed. In one sense, the car had avoided the sylistic excess of tailfins, however, the front of the car was likened to an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon, or worse.

A restyle was in order for 1959, still featuring the vertical front motif, but subduing some of the other design features. Again in 1960, a short run of 1960-Ford based vehicles was sold. The Edsel's fate had already been sealed, and the marque was discontinued. The 'Comet' model, paired with the upcoming, highly successful 'Falcon' was moved to the Mercury marque. The Edsel name became a byword for failure - and the Ford family's one time golden name was forever tarnished.

This model Edsel Citation in 2-door hardtop and convertible has been created for Flickr LUGNuts 60th build challenge - our 5th birthday, celebrating any of the previous challenges, from Challenge 30 - 'Lemons or LeMans'.
