Holden VT Commodore SS Utility (1997)
Holden launched the VT Commodore in 1997, at a similar time to Ford's AU Falcon.
Where the VT Commodore was toned and muscular, the AU was awkward. The VT propelled the Commodore past Falcon in sales, and would not relinquish this lead for the next two decades until both cars ended production.
Part of the VT's portfolio were the SS models, aimed at enthusiasts and fitted with V8 engines. Series I cars used the long-lived 5.0L Holden V8 engine, developed in the late 1960s, and rated at 179 kW / 400Nm. For series II cars, from June 1999 this was replaced with the GM LS3 5.7L engine with 220 kW / 446 Nm.
Shown here is the utility (or 'Ute' in Australia parlance). The Ute configuration was often adopted as the working-man's sportscar, rather than a true load-carrying vehicle. I high proportion of VT utes were V8-equipped SS models riding on large wheels.
