BMW E36 328i Saloon (1995)

INSTRUCTIONS AVAILABLE

The E36 Generation of the BMW Compact 3-Series launched in 1990. The new car was a radical departure from the previous 25 years of BMW design. Key features still remained – the double kidney grille, the Hoffmeister kink in the rear pillar, and twin headlamps. Where the car deviated, was the fitment of smooth covers over the headlamps, a complete lack of chrome, and even black-painted polymer bumpers on all sedan.

Powertrains, however, were classic BMW fare: 4 and 6-cylinder inline engines. Base sedans used a SOHC of 1.6 or 1.8L. Coupes enjoyed DOHC 16v version in 1.8L capacity, later to be shared with the sedan. Six cylinder power started with a 2.0L and 2.5L DOHC. These were upgraded with VANOS (variable valve timing) in 1993. These were supplemented with a 2.3L variant in 1995, and a 2.8L replacing the 2.5L in the same year. Diesel engine were available in 1.7L 4-cylinder and 2.5L 6-cylinder forms.

The E36 range initially launched with Sedan and Coupe (more like a 2-door sedan), joined in 1993 with a 2-door convertible, a wagon in 1994 and a 3-door hatchback, known under the ‘Compact’ appellation, also in 1994.

The E36 range was replaced by the similar, but larger E46 in some markets in 1998, though the E36 continued to be built in some of the numerous international manufacturing plants
