Mitsubishi Lancer GSR - 1989

Of all my friends, it was probably Kenny G who first had decent car. By decent, I mean less than 10 years old, and not a bucket of crap.

Not that I was so much envious of his car being cool, but that it worked they way it should, all the time.

Said car was a 1989 Mitsubishi Lancer GSR. Not that I was really all that wowed by the Lancer prior to Kenny G owning one. A drive back from the coast at the wheel did show me that maybe I was missing out on more than just mechanical reliability. The five-speed manual box allowing for much quieter cruising, and less powertrain NVH intrusion.

One point though - Ken was adamant that I shouldn't rest my hand on the shifter, as it would prematurely wear the gearbox. Well, Ken, now that I am 'in the know', I know this not to be true. So there you go.

Other things the GSR had in its favour were a set a very supportive and comfortable front seats. Some rear legroom, and quite tidy handling (in GSR guise). It also had some poke, from its 1.6L DOHC 16-valve producing 92 kW.

Ken's car was even a fetching fire-engine red - though this was probably still not as cool as the baby-poo mustard of my own Corolla.
