Mercedes-Benz R129SL 600 SL Roadster - 1992
The Mercedes-Benz R129SL Luxury Roadster debuted in 1989 to great fanfare. Not only did it replace the now 18-year old R107, it also heralded possibly the most advanced car in the world at the time.
The first model launched was the 5.0L DOHC 32v V8 500 SL, producing 240 kW (326 PS). This was soon joined by a new 300 SL, with a 3.0L DOHC 24v Inline-Six, producing 170 kW (231 PS).
A V12 joined the range in 1992. This model deployed the top line engine created for the new W140 S-Class saloon, a 6.0L DOHC 48v V12, producing 290 kW (394 PS).
The R129SL enjoyed a long 11-year life with only minimal visual changes. Numerous powertrain changes occurred during this period.
The handsome styling from long-term legendary Mercedes stylist Bruno Sacco still looks fantastic.
The model shown here is a redo of a model I created, probably 10 years ago. The bodywork has changed minimally, the addition of some of the new parts where they could soften the edges. Inside, the addition of the Lego technic piston motor and independent suspension, along with the opening engine cover have all improved the model significantly.
