Mercedes-Benz W110 200 Universal (1965)

The original Mercedes-Benz W110 'Fintail' model was launched in 1961. It adopted a modified version of the W111 'S' model of 1959, though with a 50mm reduced wheelbase and shortened front overhang. These changes were made possible due to the W110 being fitted exclusively with 4-cylinder engines (1.9L and 2.0L).

The term 'Fintail' or in German 'Heckflosse' , referred to the (modest by US standards) tailfins which had become a feature of vehicle styling, particularly in 1950s USA.

The W110 was updated in 1965, in a second series, including new engines. At this time, the 'S' Series was replaced by anew car, the W108/109. The second series W110 had modet visual changes, including the fitment of turn-signals and parking lights below the main headlamps. At this time, the 2.3L six-cylinder was added to the range, but without the need to increase the wheelbase.

Though the primary body type of the W110 was a four-door saloon a small number of wagon models, with the sub-type name 'Universal' were built in both Series 1 and 2 forms by independent coachbuilders some of whom also built ambulance conversions.
