Opel Monza Coupe A1 (1978)

Prior larger Opels had 2-door models prior to the Monza, based on the Rekord / Commodore or similar models. For the late 1970s Rekord / Commodore the model instead gained a new nameplate - the Monza - and used a fastback coupe style as opposed to being more of a 2-door sedan.

The car was more Commodore / Senator than Rekord, with the longer nose required for the inline six-cylinder engine, but with the shorter rear floorpan in support of a more compact format.

The Monza launched in 1978 with two six-cylinder engines a 2.5 L and 3.0 L. These engines had been developed from the inline-4 engine family, but due to a lack of development, led to poor fuel consumption (leading to the ultimate cancellation of the related six-cylinder only Commodore), as well as system failures, such as overheating problems.

The car was updated to A2 form in 1982, in line with the upgrade to the related Rekord and Senator.

Peter Brock, a well-known Australian racing driver, brought a couple of Monza bodies to Australia to assess the possibility for sales in Australia, based of a related (Australian) Commodore model which was fitted with local large-capacity inline-six and V8 engines.
