Opel Insignia B - Country Tourer AWD - 2018
Just as Opel launched the Insignia B in March 2017 came the bombshell announcement that General Motors had sold its European division to the PSA Group (known for the car marques Peugeot and Citroen).
The Insignia B had been developed upon the GM E2XX Platform shared with many other mid-size, front-drive architected cars. All Insignias were to be built in Russelsheim in Germany, as were the near-identical Holden Commodore and Buick Regal, all three vehicles being made available in Fastback, Wagon, and raised ground clearance wagon forms - as shown here with the Insignia Country Tourer.
Whereas the Regal GS and the sportier versions of the Commodore are available with a NA V6, all Insignia models are inline-four only, a 2.0 Diesel or 2.0 Petrol, and are optionally available in AWD in preference to the FWD base architecture.
The Country Tourer is aimed at the Subaru Outback set - a little extra ground clearance, AWD and some (unnecessary) body cladding to differentiate the model from the standard wagon model.
Although the car adopts the norms of this market segment and is well-equipped, GM has struggled to sell models in this segment in Europe, and with the future of Opel now perhaps more secure under PSA tenure-ship, the Insignia B may end up with a short shelf-life, as it is an obvious choice to allocate back to the PSA medium-large architecture set.
