Mitsubishi Sapporo - 1978

Although the Japanese producers did not make a habit of naming their cars after places, one example where they did, and notably also for being named after a Japanese city, is the Mitsubishi Sapporo of 1978.

This car was a hardtop coupe version of the 3rd generation RWD Galant. The car was also sold in the US under the Plymouth marque as a 'captive import'.

Styling was quite wedgey - though at launch the model was styled to reflect the trends seen at the end of the 'personal car' trend, vinyl roof, glitzy wheels and the rest. As the trend faded the car was hastily reconfigured as more of a modern 1980s-type look.

Engine included up to the 2.6 litre 'Astron II' 4-cylinder powerplant. The role of 'sportscar' within the Mitsubishi range was given to the otherwise similarly configured 'Starion' from the same period.

A second version was launched in 1987 based on the 5th generation FWD Galant model. This model was more of a 4-door hardtop than a coupe.

This miniland-scale Lego Mitusbishi Sapporo Coupe has been created for Flickr LUGNuts' 78th build challenge, - 'Places, Everyone', - featuring automotive models named after places.
