The Oulu Cultural and Heritage Center, in Bayfield County in far northern Wisconsin, features structures built by Finnish immigrants more than a century ago. A work in progress, the center includes two historic homes, a traditional Finnish sauna, and other outbuildings characteristic of the settlement periods in early Oulu history.
The 1910 John and Justina Palo Homestead already is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Adjacent to the Palo Homestead is the reconstructed 1899 log home from the John Pudas federal homestead (moved to the Palo site). During the early 1900s, the Pudas home served as gathering place for many Oulu community and religious activities, and is being restored to serve as an educational center where new generations can learn about the area's history.
The facility already has hosted events, even as work continues. Future plans include regular visitor hours to view exhibits and do genealogical research. In addition, educational programs will be available for all ages.
