Muench-Kreuzer Candle Co. Building - Syracuse, NY

The former Muench-Kreuzer Candle Company Building - The company was founded in 1925 by brothers Alexis and Norbert Muench and their cousin Frederick Kreuzer. The company began to be called by its adopted name Emkay, a play on the company's original name, because many customers did not know how to pronounce Muench-Kreuzer. For many years the company sold commercial and religious candles. The candles were sold directly to the public from a retail store in front of its factory. 15 years ago the company pulled out of the commercial candle business due to the cheap mass produced foreign imports that had begun to cut into their sales. They then began selling only religious candles to churches. Those sales also started to decline forcing the company to finally shut down its operation altogether in 2011, making it the fourth Syracuse candle company to close shop. In 2012 the building was sold to a developer to be turned into apartments. The outside of the building will still retain its warehouse character. Located at 617 East Hiawatha Blvd in Syracuse, NY.
