Lunar Orbiter Payload - Eastman House
A side view shot of the Lunar Orbiter Payload - Eastman Kodak Co, Rochester, circa 1967. Employing cutting-edge camera, film, and processing technology, the Lunar Orbiter produced a photographic survey of the landing sites on the moon in advance of the manned Apollo flights of the late 1960s and 70s. The camera payload was designed and maufactured in Rochester by the Eastman Kodak Co for NASA. It held unperforated 65mm film that once exposed by the Orbiter's two lenses was processed and analog scanned onboard before images were transmitted by satellite to earth. The images had the highest resolution and produced the most detailed view of the moon. In total, five Lunar Orbiters explored the earth's moon, from horizon to horizon. The example presented here was intended to be the seventh, but was never deployed due to the early success of the Lunar Orbiter program.
