What a difference a renovation can make - it saved this wonderful old house. The long vacant Babcock-Shattuck House has been transformed after 20 years of disrepair - from an eyesore to its former grandeur on the outside but this time around, the inside will be turned into four luxury condos. Three of the four condos will be two stories. Each will have its own unique features, and one unit will have a bedroom inside the home's turret with the turret being exposed on the inside. The house was previously boarded up and covered with graffiti for years. The Queen Anne home, built in 1895, was constructed of stone, wood and asphalt. It was originally the private residence of Dr. Archer Babcock, a prominent surgeon. It later became the home of local businessman Frank Shattuck. Later still it would serve as a post for Jewish War Veterans after World War II. It would eventually become vacant and fell into disrepair and in the 1990s, neighborhood activists fought off attempts to demolish the building from developers who wanted to build a Rite Aid Drug Store. UNPA (University Neighborhood Preservation Association), a nonprofit, acquired the property from the City of Syracuse in 2012. When the restoration is totally finished the cost will $1.4 million. Funding included a $200,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Fund, $335,000 from UNPA and a $650,000 construction loan from Home Headquarters. Proceeds from the condo units will cover the rest of the expenses. (I have the "before" photos of this house in my photostream -- the renovation is remarkable.
