Born in New Jersey Grace Hartigan became one of the leading proponents of the so-called "second generation" of abstract expressionism in New York. She was closely allied with Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Larry Rivers and others. While she made her early reputation in a non-objective style her painting eventually made a return to the figure. Ms. Hartigan later relocated to Baltimore where she was the head of painting at the Maryland Institute of Art for over 30 years.
