NS T 26 Fishing and Flipping
This job is not for the faint-at-heart. These men flip 20-35 lb average track plates onto the new ties where they will be installed under the new tie to the tune of nearly 1000 each a day. That adds up to nearly twenty tons of steel flipped every day at a fast walking pace. I know this for a fact as I did this job in 1990-91 as a young green buck on my short-lived railroad tenure. The motion and weight is back breaking, wearing in small increments. The one positive is it only takes a few weeks on this job to drop twenty pounds and build arms, shoulders and pectorals that any strength-training bodybuilder would die for. I always referred to the gang as "Club NS", a direct reference to the "Club Med" gyms of my day that touted the best gym workout in the world. I came home in 1991 in the best shape of my life. My shoulders and forearms were so big I could not wear any of my old coats or shirts bought prior to leaving for the gang and I lost weight and size.. Talk about a workout routine! Go hang with these boys and pump a little iron for a day--if you can hang, which after about two days would be unlikely, you will find a new meaning to the term "hard body.". This is an entry level railroad job with all the perks of such a position. It is hard, dirty and fills every muscle in your body with relentless pain while turning you into a country strong monster if you can hang on. It is the initiation into the world of railroad Maintenance of Way and is intended to make or break you as a green buck. I survived the experience. I will leave it at that!
