Ugly Pigeon, The

Along the short stretch of the River Thames that forms Gordon Promenade, people often feed the various birds that congregate there: pigeons, gulls and in smaller numbers, swans - although I've counted 40 or more at times. At present, there seem to be very few.

Someone had left a fairly large amount of brown bread on the prom, I was sitting waiting for a ship to make its slow journey up river and in front of me, pigeons began gathering to begin work on the bread, shortly followed by a number of squabbling gulls who would try to fly away with the larger pieces, drop them when they were mobbed by the other gulls and fly off elsewhere. A solitary swan appeared and picked up the floating pieces.
