Kandy Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens of Kandy were pleasure gardens before the Britts came to Sri Lanka. It’s a huge estate with a big circle meadow in the middle surrounded by all kinds of trees, bushes, flowers and plants. They also have a beautiful orchidarium which is worth a visit. Amongst my favorite trees is the “Canon ball tree” that has fruits that look like, yes you guessed it, cannonballs : ) There’s also the “Sausage tree” with fruits that look like, yes you guessed it again, sausages! Wish they had the shark tree with fruits that looked like… ok, maybe not, but still it would’ve been pretty cool.
A scam we ran into this time is that the gardeners told us they found a scorpion and wondered if we wanted to see it. We looked at it and where amazed how unafraid the gardener seemed to be, a bit too unafraid actually. When he walked away he kept it on his broom and wandered of looking back at us as if though making sure we weren’t seeing him. It turned out that he had tied it down onto his broom and probably kept that broom ready for anyone who walked by. We laughed a bit afterwards because we thought it might have been a dead one. Just for fun I asked one of the other gardeners if he had any scorpions and lo and behold in a big leaf tucked behind a tree he had a scorpion tied up with piano string. I don’t know if they drugged them somehow or if they were just deprived of food but they where way to calm to be healthy. Felt really sorry for them afterwards.
The gardens are an amazing place for an afternoon stroll and if you’re lucky you bump into some interesting people when there.
