walking Città Sant'Angelo

Perched majestically at an elevation of 320 metres on a ridge overlooking the rolling Vestina hills and the expansive Adriatic Sea, Città Sant'Angelo stands as one of Italy's most remarkable medieval borghi, proudly belonging to the prestigious I Borghi più belli d'Italia association. The historic center is defined by an elegant architectural tapestry dating primarily from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, featuring honey-colored stone palazzi, wrought-iron balconies, and warm terracotta rooftops that harmonize seamlessly with the coastal horizon. This elevated strategic vantage point, located just 15 kilometres inland from Pescara, allowed the settlement to control vital agrarian and defensive routes since antiquity, evolving from ancient foundations into a sophisticated ecclesiastical and noble stronghold marked by distinguished civic structures like the Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo.

The culinary heritage of Città Sant'Angelo reflects its unique geographical position bridging the rugged Apennine mountains and the azure Adriatic coast, offering a rich synthesis of land and sea flavors. Traditional gastronomy features iconic Abruzzese specialties such as maccheroni alla chitarra—handcrafted egg pasta cut on traditional steel strings—paired with robust ragù, alongside succulent arrosticini (mutton skewers) and fresh seafood sourced directly from the nearby coast. Furthermore, the surrounding terraced slopes are deeply embedded in regional viticulture and oleoculture, producing renowned local wines such as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and exceptional extra virgin olive oils under dedicated designation charters.
