Stone-bearing stone By Peter Randall-Page
Peter Randall-Page makes sculpture in stone which he carves into tightly compact, organic shapes.
His work has a strong relationship to natural forms, biological systems and spiritual thought. Plant shapes, seeds, fruit and coiling forms can be seen in much of his work. Inner shapes are often revealed or seem to grow from one another, sometimes displaying intricate patterns that are hidden within.
Here, the precision of Randall-Page's carving melds with naturally worn boulders, creating forms that suggest pregnancy or an emerging seed or shoot, laden with promise and weight. This piece comprises one small, unworked granite glacial erratic boulder fitted precisely into another much larger boulder. The only 'worked' part of the sculpture is the aperture in the larger stone and the area immediately surrounding it.
