I’ve been working with stencils for more than a year now. In order to get some longevity out of the mostly paper stencils & to make as many as forty works in one sitting, I began to cut-up brown grocery bags & tape them down for use as a rag to wipe the stencils. How could an artist throw these painted scraps away? When the paper acquires too much paint to be of use I use it as a canvas. I was inspired by the works included in the Latin American Cartonera Publishers Database, via a Spidertangle e-mail from mIEKAL aND, to give these grocery bag works credence, instead of thinking of them solely as unfortunate by-products of near poverty, process or inventions of necessity.
