C7202, CHY420C, a Bristol FLF6B with a standard 70-seat Eastern Coach Works body, was but 4 months old when photographed here at Bromley Heath, east Bristol, about to set off for Lawrence Weston on the other side of the city, on November 6th 1965, the day before a major revision to Bristol's city services. Behind the FLF is C8036, a 1952 Bristol KSW6B, which was withdrawn from service the following year.
I had a love/hate relationship with the FLFs at the time: I hated the fact that their arrival meant the withdrawal of more of the city's standard bus, the open platform KSW, but I loved their clean, fresh appearance, especially when new. The paintwork gleamed and the black edging to the cream bands and the cream window rubbers neatly edged the colour changes, whilst the whole appearance was improved by the yellow/gold "Bristol" scroll boldy displayed on the side panel and those wonderful rear "dustbin lid" wheel discs.
I can close my eyes and still experience sitting upstairs, in the single seat by the stairwell, having the warm blast of air from the CBC heating blow in my face whilst listening to the melodic high pitched transmission whine as the bus quickly moved across The Downs, homeward bound on a cold Sunday afternoon after a "spotting" visit to Lawrence Hill depot, and thinking of an early start for school the next morning and the freezing cold interior of a city KSW!
