Hands and hearts

Her hand in mine. That girl. She simultaneously breaks and heals my heart.

 

We went shopping today and I realized she'd never been in a mall. Never been in a Toys R Us. She responded like my kids responded the first time they saw the Magic Kingdom. She was amazed with a hot pink "princess" dress. We bought it and let her be the princess she is.

 

The girl who wished for a bed. A pillow. Crayons.

 

Check.

Check.

Check.

 

And more. So much more is in that pink and green room. And so much more will be in there.

 

Including love. Simple unabashed love.

 

The girl who has had her hair hacked off as punishment. She wanted it to be cleaned up so she faced her fears. Still, she trembled as her hair was trimmed. Visibly trembled.

 

I couldn't help but cry.

 

A cupcake was her reward.

 

The girl who has never had a birthday party. Who laughed to find out that she and the dog are the same age. The dog who has always had a bed. The dog who has even had a birthday party.

 

She held my hand throughout the day. I can feel her trust. When we told her we loved her, she said, "I know."

 

Healing. So powerfully healing to see the resiliency of that girl.
