Considered one of the greatest Filipino painters of the 19th century, Félix Resurrección Hidalgo was deeply influenced by Impressionism during the period he spent studying in Europe. Hidalgo enjoyed depicting scenes from daily life by using a combination of loose brushwork and close pigment application to capture the fleeting effect of natural light.

Tempestad Nocturna is a beautiful example of Hidalgo's ability to capture the raw power of nature in his paintings. Through his use of color, light, and brushwork, he creates a vivid and evocative scene that captures the movement of turbulent waves against a blustery sky. In many ways, this masterpiece can be seen as part of a chronology of events, perhaps the precedent to the placid seascape Marina, which he completed in 1900.
