Chest of Drawers
A Baliuag chest of drawers
Estimate: PHP 200,000 - 220,000
Last quarter, 19th century
Bulacan
Red narra, bone / kamagong / lanite inlays, silver / kamagong mounts
111.5 x 99 x 54.5 cm (43 1/2 x 39 x 21 1/2 in)
When popularity of the use of storage chests reached the Philippines by the 1800s from Europe, chest of drawers and comoda with two drawers and two doors emerged, the former being more unusual and more expensive. The case top of this example’s central panel is mitered in front and butt joined at the back. The top edge and the drawer frame are painstakingly outlined with kamagong, then inlaid with dense bone lozenges, clearly demarcating the larger topmost drawer and the three smaller drawers below. The drawer faces are inlaid with triple borders using fine kamagong and lanite strips; both ends of the case have conforming inlaid triple boarders. Keyhole escutcheons are in silver while the drawer pulls are in kamagong which have been turned and accentuated at the center also with silver. The turned inverted vase feet descend from flower-inlaid knees, connected by segmented spandrels inlaid with flower sprays. Some inlays are missing. A very beautiful and useful piece of furniture that can be moved around the house.
Lot 99 of the Salcedo Auctions auction on 26 November 2022. Please see salcedoauctions.com/auction/under-the-tree-the-wish-list-... for more details.
