Tambol Aparador

A marvelous 3-piece Neoclassical aparador

Estimate: PHP 250,000 - 300,000

Last quarter, 19th century

Bulacan

Narra, narra / brass mounts

244 x 155 x 74 cm (96 x 61 x 29 in)

Provenance:

Formerly from the Manalastas family of Baliuag, Bulacan

Armoires of this size can only be found in grand houses owned by wealthy families, and placed in the main bedroom to store and keep neatly folded clothes and other valuables. The intentional relative sobriety in decorations on this cabinet is balanced by the outstanding proportions and craftsmanship. The molded edge of “par enroulement” or winding pediment / crown has Neoclassical volutes centering an anthemion, accentuated by bulbous urn finials on either side. Opening the doors carved with floating oblong center reveals internal shelves and drawers. Acanthus leaves and bolection molding on the frieze and base drawers add volume to this heavy-looking piece, while concealing the block feet behind it. No longer confined to the bedroom, this can become a centerpiece in a classical themed, or even in a modern living area.
